SIMILAR KIND

There is something for everyone in Similar Kind. Evocative lyrics, playful synths, compelling grooves, and smooth sax licks blend effortlessly, proving they never force their songs to land on a specific target. Their sound has been likened to artists such as Japanese Breakfast, Benee, Magdalena Bay, and Hiatus Kaiyote. Similar Kind originated in a Connecticut garage almost seven years ago and have “been on the grind” ever since, which is made evident in their music. It’s often described as “fun” and “tight” by listeners, made possible through their camaraderie and collaboration developed in their years of playing together. This companionship shines through the six piece alt-pop band’s live performances as well. Lead singer Julia Breen, bassist Prince Porter, drummer Miles Dominici, guitarist Ben McNamara, keyboardist Jake James, and saxophonist Matt Oriente work in tandem to connect with every crowd - and get them dancing. The group is eager to share their first full-length album, good grief!, with audiences on June 6th, with the first single “search party” starting the rollout on April 11th. The album is a mature step for the band, exploring themes of complex grief and the dramatic changes a grieving person and their mindset through. Yet even beside heavy themes, the melodies and rhythms mostly remain dramatic, energetic, and razor sharp.

ESMER

Esmer is the primary alias of 19 year-old vocalist and producer, Justin Esmer. A native to New Haven, Esmer combines wit-peppered lyrics and smooth baritone vocals, blurring the lines between alt rock, r&b, hip-hop, and jazz. His writing reflects on vulnerability, relationships, and depression. Led by Esmer, he fronts his band with dreamy electric guitar and harmonies. He is backed up by Mekhi Banks (bass), Brooke Dougan/Cam Hall (guitar), Ben Bailis (keys), and Joe Bruno (drums).
